The Biometrics Institute has announced the launching of their 2011 Industry Survey in order to know the different perspectives of the market and the companies involved in the it. Most of the companies involved are in Australia and New Zealand, but also in US, Italy, Netherlands and Switzerland. The survey is intended to give a whole view from the different companies involved in this area.
Also, the 2011 Industry Survey is the second one that has been implemented. The previous survey was for the period of 2009-2010 and it showed a significant development during the period. The expectations of this year’s survey are that the developments in the biometric market have risen even more than previous years. This issue is an important matter for all the companies and governments involved and also is an opportunity to others to be on the spotlight.
The survey is a relevant matter for the biometric industry because knowing the results, companies that have not showed an increment in their production, can be able to see their failures and weaknesses. We expect that surveys like these can give a general view over the different applications and the potential market for the biometric companies.

In US, by a voter’s initiative named Measure R, the government approved the project for the expansion of the Metro Orange Line, complete with bikeways and pedestrian paths, in Los Angeles. The idea of the initiative started in November 2008, when the majority of the Los Angeles’ Counties approved Measure R that propose a tax increase in order to cover the costs of the expansion of the line. The government also supported this idea because Measure R will represent important benefits in the future, like an opportunity to raise a 40 billion fund to transit projects; also it will also generate an important source of jobs.
This initiative is compound of 12 transit projects that include the expansion of the Orange Metro Line, the pedestrian paths, bikeways, among others. The implementation of those ideas will reduce the gasoline usage, the traffic congestion and pollution. Additionally, they generate an important number of new jobs and increase the local economy by linking different cities and people. There are similar projects around the world, such as in Brazil, Netherlands, Switzerland, Philippines and in South America.
The Measure R initiative is a significant way to generate different solutions for the state and then the country, because, there is the idea to expand this project to other cities of the US. Also, more people are directly and indirectly beneficiated from this project because it will raise the economy of the state and it will create different links between cities. For these reason, the Measure R project is an interesting solution for the country that will benefit a big sector of people.

It has been proved The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is the best option when it comes to public transport. This transportation has had an important success in several countries in the world, like, Netherlands, Mexico, Switzerland, France, Brazil, Mexico, US, Italy and some countries of South America. It is because BRT is an organized way of public transport that allows the citizens to enjoy a more prepared transport system, with schedules, and faster buses. Also the city needs an important preparation in order to implement the BRT.
According to several experts in the area of public transport, BRT has brought an important impact to the common cities, like Amsterdam and Maryland, because it has considerably reduced the traffic jams, CO2 pollution and the accidents in the streets. These are the principal problems that the governments face in their countries, and BRT is the biggest solution they could find, because it is a significant answer to the traffic problems. For instance, in Mexico, the implementation of the BRT and the expansion of the roads have shown determining changes in the lifestyle of the regular citizen.
In conclusion, the BRT is a revolutionary way of implementing public transport, and nowadays more countries are interested in using the BRT as a solution. Mostly Latin American countries are the ones that are experiencing the most radical changes, but also, European countries, like Turkey, are also having important changes in their lifestyles.

The German company of automotive components, Continental, is now developing a integrated stereo camera as a component of a braking system. The idea of this project is to create a braking system that can stop the car when the camera recognizes a pedestrian and with this it can avoid possible accident, or at least, reduce their seriousness. The lead technician in charge of the camera, Richard Rolland, says that with the implementation of this camera, we expect to reduce the car accidents and also to create a new way of thinking in the traffic.
The high-resolution cameras are made of brand alloy, and they can detect and measure different objects in the vehicle’s road. Since the cameras work in pairs they can determine the distance between the object and the car. The vision created by these cameras can be compared to the human spatial vision. The company expects to release the device to different countries, like, Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, Philippines and later in South America.
The company expects to create a new way of perceiving the view of the road. The idea Continental wants to implement is not only to reduce the number of car accidents in the streets but also to aware the driver to have more conscience of the pedestrians.

NFC is the technology that will be on the spotlight in next years, because more people and companies are interested in using NFC devices. The recent reports on technology and security expresses that NFC will transform the way people use payments and web authentications. For instance, the journalist for the Mercator Advisory Group, Richard Smith, wrote that NFC-equipped smart phones will make people accede to different method for security features, such as PIN entry, fingerprint reading and more.
The main procedure that NFC uses is authenticating because it is the most important idea of this technology. With these smart phones, equipped with NFC, and other security systems, they will give to the consumers, and to the governmental offices, an unprecedented control over the payments and security interactions. There are different brands that are interested in implementing NFC in their devices, like, Broadcom, Apple, AT&T, Verizon, Discover, and others.
The use of NFC in smart phones and other security systems will make payments and security interactions easier, but even more reliable. For many investors, companies and marketing agencies, this is the future of payments and the way they manage their credentials. And in next years, this NFC will develop more ways to create better technologies and more ideas to protect information. The project has already implemented in different cities, like, Maryland, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey and Michigan.

Since March the 3rd until October of 2012, in Philippines, there will be the voter’s registration for the general elections in 2013. For being able for the registration, people who are interested must be at least 18 years old and resident of the Philippines for one year. They will need to present their IDs when to complete the registration.
If we take a look at previous elections in the Philippines, we cannot avoid the work made by Smartmatic. This is because, in 2005 there were the general elections in Philippines, and using pcos machines, Smartmatic developed a massive voting registration, giving successful results. Smartmatic registered more than 500,000,000 of voters, including islands and rural areas. Also, in that year, the government of Philippines acceded to implement the Electronic vote. That experience in the country encouraged others to implement its same methodology, such as in France, Italy, Curacao, US and Venezuela.
The previous experiences in Philippines definitively will help to improve the new processes in these next years. This voting registration will include Smartmatic’s participation that will help in the development of the process and in this time, they are trying to beat their previous word’s record.

In a recent meeting, spokesmen from different companies, including Smartmatic, have announced the new and specialized technology focused on new biometric devices. The latest technology in biometric systems is a compilation of previous system with new ways of getting biometrics, such as, iris scan, subdermal and vascular authentication. This new ways of processing data creates a more secure environment in the working area.
The combination of more than one biometrics is the latest way of protecting information. Smartmatic, for example, is integrating these biometrics because just the use of fingerprint recognition, ID cards or iris scanning is not enough, but with the evolution of these systems, more companies are interested in investing in other security ways. For instance, 3D fingerprint scanning, or the vascular authentication, that recognizes the position of the veins in the arm, and even the use of subdermal sensors is the vanguard technology in the market.
Countries like Mexico and India are incorporating iris recognition for the national database of the governments. And Italy, Switzerland, US, Curacao, Philippines, New Zealand and Venezuela, have recently joined the Smart way of protecting data. The use of this type of technology in trending upwards and people are more acceptable towards it and in the future, it will have more benefits and it could be more affordable for every one.
